Voice mods can be one of the most fun and one of the most frustrating things to make. It won't look as good, but at least it'll look uniform. there's no way to really change them yourself as far as I can tell, but if they look really off (hard cuts that are visible in-game as well), your best bet is to right-click the mesh in question and click "Fill tangent/bitangent space with constant". Like I said, I use Materialize for easy normal and specular maps.Īlternatively, if all of the textures are fine, but you are still running into issues, it might be worth checking out the tangents and bitangents under the "Shading" menu in Switch Toolbox (image 3). You might not have replaced the normal map yet. There are sudden sharp edges on my character It won't look as good, but it'll be functional. Alternatively, if that's too much work, you could use an entirely grey texture. Just remember that the baking should be done on a seperate UV map layer, which includes all objects on your character. Here's a tutorial for baking an ambient occlusion map in blender: it focuses on courses specifically, which is slightly different from characters, but it's mostly the same process. If certain spots of the bake are too dark, the game thinks that part of the model is entirely obscured and therefore pitch black. This small texture, usually called "Bake_(Character)_g00_b00_f00", is used to add the illusion of shadow to a character. There's probably an issue with the Ambient Occlusion Bake, or simply the bake. Regardless, these are the most common issues you may face. Also, make sure not to go overboard with your textures: the average size of textures for large characters is 1024 x 1024 smaller characters more commonly use 512 x 512. I often use Materialize to easily create normal and specular maps. Textures are usually pretty self-explanatory, but things can look weird if you don't replace all textures (i.e: diffuse, specular map, normal, bake and emission if required).

If it's too low, assign a tiny amount of weight to a random bone on your mesh.

The method for changing the skin count might differ between programs: in Blender, for example, if your skin count is too high, go to weight paint mode and click on "weights -> limit total", then limit to the necessary amount.

If all verticies are influenced by two bones, but one of them is influenced by four, you'd have a skin count of 4 (anything higher than 4 automatically defaults to 4).Ĭheck the skin count of the meshes of the model you're trying to replace: all meshes on your replacing model should have the same skin count as at least one of the meshes of the original. For example, if the entire mesh is only influenced by one bone, you'd have a skin count of 1. This indicates the maximum amount of bones that influence any vertex on the mesh. szs file in Switch Toolbox, go to Objects and select a mesh, you can see the 'skin count' on the right (see image 2). There's probably an issue with the weight count: if you select the mesh under the. Parts of/ my entire character aren't visible (but I can select them) If not, make sure none of the textures are larger than the originals: eye textures should be the same size or smaller than the original eye textures. Check if the Driver.szs file is too big: I'm not sure where exactly the limit is, but if it's anything above 2600 KB, it's worth looking into. If the rig's fine, it's likely that there are issues with the file size. They don't have to be functional, and you can add bones that the original character didn't have, but the game will crash if it cannot find a specific bone. The skeleton of any given character can be seen in the "skeleton" file under the model. If you imported a custom skeleton (or another character's skeleton), make sure all bones the original character had are present (see image 1). In my experience, there are two things that can cause this: there are problems with the rig, or something's too big. Game freezes on selecting or hovering over character I also haven't tested these on the Switch a lot, so there might be some additional issues or 'symptoms' I'm not aware about.
#Mod file driver how to#
This isn't supposed to be some in-depth tutorial about modding itself, nor am I gonna cover any advanced stuff: these are just some of the issues I had and how to fix them.

I've done a couple character mods, and I've run into a number of issues and quirks, so I figured I'd do a quick troubleshooting for those starting out.
